The TESLA 4CBUS is the control box for DAB TESLA 4 in three wire single phase submersible motors, covering 0.5 HP through 5 HP. It houses the start capacitor, the run capacitor where fitted, the starting relay and the overload protector that a three wire motor needs in order to start and to be protected in service. The enclosure is metal with a protective painted coating and comes with three knockouts for conduit entry.

A 3-wire single phase submersible motor cannot run without a matching control box. Unlike a three phase motor, a single phase motor produces only a fraction of its rated torque at startup, so the starting components it needs are placed outside the motor in the control box. DAB states plainly in the TESLA installation manual: the pump will not operate without this control box, and operation without the control box will burn out the motor. The box must also match the motor horsepower and voltage, because the capacitors and overload inside it are sized to that motor.

Two construction types are offered. The Small Type covers 0.5 HP to 1 HP and is capacitor start (CSIR); it is built in the Basic configuration only. The Large Type covers 1.5 HP to 5 HP and is capacitor start capacitor run (CSCR); it is offered in both Basic and Plus. The Plus boxes contain magnetic line contactors carefully matched to the motor rating, eliminating the need for external line contactors. Capacitor values are identical between Basic and Plus at every horsepower, so the choice is purely whether the contactor is built in or wired externally. Boxes are NEMA 3R rated for indoor or outdoor mounting and must be mounted vertically with the top side up so the starting relay works correctly.
