Every Dramm irrigation nozzle that screws in uses a 3/8 in Whitworth thread, not NPT, and these are the fittings that put that thread where the nozzle has to go. The assembly insert is a threaded gasket: drill a 7/16 in hole in schedule 40 PVC, aluminum or galvanized pipe, push the insert in, then screw the nozzle down so it expands the insert against the pipe wall and seals, with no tapping. The two pipe nipples carry the same 3/8 in Whitworth thread up onto a 1/2 in riser instead, one screwing onto a threaded riser and one cementing onto a plain one, for beds where an overhead line is unwanted or impossible. The butterfly adaptor is the outlier here: it converts a 3/8 in Whitworth port to a 6mm press fit connection rather than mounting a nozzle to pipe.
The choice is really a choice of what you are mounting to. If the nozzle goes straight into an overhead pipeline, use the assembly insert, because one 7/16 in hole per nozzle is far quicker than drilling and tapping every hole, and it is rated to 50 psi. Two things rule it out: it will not seal in schedule 80 PVC, where the wall is too thick for the insert to expand against, and Dramm does not permit it with High Pressure Misty Mist nozzles. Both of those have to be drilled and tapped instead. If you are coming up on a riser rather than hanging pipe overhead, use a nipple: the threaded pipe nipple screws onto a 1/2 in NPT threaded PVC riser, the slip fit pipe nipple cements over a plain 1/2 in PVC riser, and both present the same 3/8 in Whitworth thread at the top. The butterfly adaptor is for the case where the port is 3/8 in Whitworth but what you are connecting is 6mm press fit.
