Methanol is a colorless, volatile, and flammable toxic alcohol with a mild, solvent-like odor. Primarily produced from natural gas, it is a crucial industrial chemical used to produce formaldehyde, acetic acid, and MTBE, and as a solvent, fuel, and antifreeze. Methanol has a boiling point of approximately 64.7C (148.5F).
Common Uses
- Chemical Intermediate: The largest use is converting to formaldehyde (for resins, plastics) and acetic acid.
- Fuel: Used as a fuel in racing cars, for fuel blending (gasoline octane booster), and as a clean-burning alternative energy source.
- Solvent: Widely used as a solvent in inks, resins, dyes, and adhesives.
Physical Properties
- Antifreeze: Used in automobile radiators and windshield washer fluid.
- Appearance: Colorless, volatile liquid.
- Boiling Point: - 64.7C (148.5F)
- Density: Less dense than water, Vapors are heavier than air.
- Odor: Distinctive, slightly sweet, alcohol-like odor.
- Solubility: Completely mixes with water.
-
Flame: Burns with an almost invisible pale blue flame.
Environmental and Safety Impacts
-
Toxicity: Highly toxic; ingestion, inhalation, or skin absorption can cause blindness, metabolic acidosis, central nervous system damage, and death.
-
Environmental Fate: It is biodegradable and does not persist in the environment; however, it can be harmful if released in large quantities.
-
Atmospheric Impact: Breaks down in the air via reaction with hydroxyl radicals, with a half-life of roughly 18 days.
