DAB TESLA 6 in Well Pump Control Box

The TESLA 6CBUS is the large frame control box for DAB TESLA 6 in three wire single phase submersible motors, covering 7.5 HP, 10 HP and 15 HP at 230V. It carries the multiple start and run capacitors, the starting relay, the magnetic line contactor and the overload protection that a single phase motor of this size requires. All three ratings are built as Plus units, so the magnetic line contactors are already inside the box and matched to the motor rating, and no external line contactor has to be installed.

A 3-wire single phase submersible motor cannot run without a matching control box. Unlike a three phase motor, a single phase motor produces only a fraction of its rated torque at startup, so the starting components it needs are placed outside the motor in the control box. DAB states plainly in the TESLA installation manual: the pump will not operate without this control box, and operation without the control box will burn out the motor. The box must also match the motor horsepower and voltage, because the capacitors and overload inside it are sized to that motor.

These are capacitor start capacitor run boxes in a substantially larger enclosure than the 4 in range, roughly 15.4 in tall, reflecting the number and size of the capacitors involved. Single phase submersible control boxes use NEMA 3R enclosures for indoor or outdoor mounting and must be mounted vertically with the top side up, since relay manufacturers require correct relay orientation for reliable operation. Shade the box from direct sunlight where ambient temperature exceeds 95 F, because excessive heat dries out capacitors and shortens their life.
